GRUPO FOLKLORICO DE MEXICO                                   "TONATIUH"

 

TONATIUH Significa“ Dios del sol o Nuevo Sol “en lengua Nahuatl .y fue escogido en honor a un profesor de baile de  Luz Adriana.

​

El Grupo Tonatiuh  está bajo la dirección  de Luz Adriana Castillo. Egresada de la Escuela Nacional de Danza Folklórica Mexicana de  la Cd. De México.

El Grupo  se formo en Octubre del  2001  presentándose cada fin de semana en el Restaurante el Jacalito;  

Todos los Sábados presentando un Repertorio Distinto, Durante 3 años.

Con el Nacimiento de sus dos hijos  la Directora Luz Adriana, decide iniciar las clase para niños en el 2012 .

El  objetivo principal que los niños nacidos en Canadá o que llegan de México muy chiquitos no pierdan sus raíces y  Conozcan las tradiciones Mexicanas a través del baile y la música. Al mismo tiempo hace hincapié que el Folklore como muchas otras cosas se transmiten de generación en generación a través del ejemplo por eso mismo anima a los papas y mamas de los niños que también se unan al grupo sin importar edad o habilidades dancísticas, lo importante es que convivan en esta actividad con sus hijos y se crea un ambiente Familiar muy sano.

TONATIUH means the God of the sun in the Aztec lenguage but the name was choosen in honor of a dance profesor who pass away in 2001 and was very fund of Luz Adriana.

the group was created in October 2001, for Luz Adriana Castillo dancer from the Mexican School of folkloric Dance in Mexico City , her passion for the dance bring her to present a diferent folklore show every saturday night at a mexican restaurant in Toronto for 3 years, after having her boys she stop for a while but in 2012 she decide to start dancing and teaching again but this time focusing more in the kids .

her mission is to pass the mexicans tradition and histoty trought the dance, so kids even if they born in Canada or other country can relate to their roots and feel proud about it.

Luz Adriana Castillo

Graduated from the National School of Mexican Folk Dance (ENDF-INBA) in Mexico City. She began her dance studies in Ballet at age 7, at the artistic initiation Schools, has some training in contemporary dance and jazz but her major is in Mexican Folklore.

 

Luz was part of the Representative group during her time at the National School and had the opportunity to participate at International Folk Festivals such as  Majorca Spain, Dijon- France and Sicilia Folk Fest.

 After graduating, Luz had the invitation to participate as instructor and choreographer at The Mexican Folk Group “Alianza” in Toronto, Canada, (1998- 1999) a year after she was invited also to be the instructor and choreographer of the “Viva Mexico Dance Group”.  In 2001 she started her own dance group called “TONATIUH” in honor of one of the last teachers she had in Mexico City, since then she has been dedicated to the promotion and diffusion of Mexican Folklore, the Culture and Mexican traditions in Toronto and the GTA

 

During 2002-2006 time as owner of a Mexican Restaurant Luz and her family present weekend shows with folklore and Mariachi during 3 years Luz was in charge of the production of new material for the show.

 

In 2013 she create the new “Tonatiuh” with classes for kids, Her goal with the children group has been to promote  and transmit the knowledge of her Mexican Culture and traditions through dance and events   making sure the kids  feel proud about their roots.

 

 In 2016 Luz created her 1st production in theater “Vida despues de la muerte”” Life after Dead” a story where kids were the main characters, was a moment to celebrate children that went to soon to the other world and how they enjoy in the festivities during November 1st, they are happy when family and friends come to visit them and they dance and play as if they were alive again.

 

Luz  is a Member of the Board of Directors of ALCA  Latin-American  Alliance for Culture & Arts where their main objective is to work together as community for the community promoting the Latin American Culture organizing diverse events and activities during the year, one of the event is “Vive Latino America Festival “

 

Luz is also member of the organizing Collective for the “Day of the Dead” celebration that is been happening for over 8 years, she has been involved during the preparation of the event an as volunteer coordinator and performer.

Profesional Dancer from Acapulco, Guerrero, graduated from the University in Guadalajara Jalisco and was part of the Ballet of same university.

she has been dancing with Luz Adriana since 1998.
